The Past and Future

About Me

I can remember that when I was very young my mother told me that I was Cherokee, Comanche, English, Irish, and Dutch. I have found some of the English, the Irish seems to be Scot-Irish, except for one lady from New Amsterdam (which I doubt that my mother had ever heard of) the Dutch seems to be "Black Dutch". The American Indian still eludes me, other than the fact that her mother's Grand- mother was said to be Cherokee, prob. from AL- at least that is what my great-grandmother Ida Regina ORSBORNE's (or OSBORNE's) birthplace is listed as on the 1920 Stonewall County, TX Federal Census.

I also know that there is American Indian on my dad's maternal (Cherokee-through is mother's mother Samantha Alberta "Mattie" Patton Coplen. We're not sure which or her parents this is from-the PATTON or STEVENS/STEPHENS. There is also Indian on his paternal lines-his mother always told him that he was as much Indian as she was because of his father. We're also not sure which grandparent or grandparents this is from-BEEBE or RICHARDSON and VAUGH(a)N, or what tribe-This may be the Comanche, and possibly Creek and/or Choctaw?

I'm also an aging hippie and a college senior. I plan on law school (specializing in Human Rights /Public Interest Law) in the Aug 1999. It took me a long time to decided what I'm going to do when I grow up, Mommy! I have lived in the West Indies and Central America for 8 years (our two youngest daughters were born in Barbados- Kymberly, by adoption and Larissa, by birth). We had 5 children altogether-my daughter by my first marriage- Sidra Samantha (named for her great-great-grandmother), my husband Peter's two sons by his first marriage- Marc and Brian, and the two Bajans.

Unfortunately, Brian committed suicide on August 9, 1998 at 23, just as we were really starting to develop a relationship. Brian leaves a daughter, Morgan, by his widow, Leah. Morgan was adopted before we discovered her existence, but we're hoping for some contact with the adoptive family.

Sidra and her husband Douglas have an eight-year-old daughter- Brin and a 6-year-old son- Keenan. Larissa and her partner Phillip will have a daughter, Ilana, who is due the first week in May.

I love experiencing different cultures and getting to know different kinds of people. I firmly believe that there is only one race-HUMAN-everything else is culture and ethnicity. There is plenty of room on Mother Earth for all kinds of differences, but not if we can't respect each other's rights to our own beliefs-yours is as good as mine, just different maybe.

We have to learn to take care of our Mother Earth now! I want something beautiful and healthy left for my grandchildren, and then for their grandchildren (and yours!).

ADD and learning disabilities run rampant in my family. I think I'm probably both (though not diagnosed), so this page will probably always be under construction. Between juggling school (I commute), family, genealogy, learning about American Indians, 'puting, and my new interest Pottery, I tend to be kind of busy (we won't even mention a tendency to be easily distracted and to hyper-focus!)

Personal Interests

My main interests are learning all I can about my American Indian heritage-I'm a member of the Native American Intertribal Association of the Far Away Cherokee of Memphis, TN, genealogy, and computing, etc. I love music (I have eclectic tastes-what else!), reading (ditto), horses, the beach, art and crafts-esp. making pottery and Indian items, folk medicine and tales, all animals, esp. interested in wolves and owls. I'm interested in good friends, good wine, good food, good company, and love meeting different kinds of people, and learning about new cultures, customs, and food

Because of our son Brian's suicide, I am also very interested in suicide prevention and child abuse. I believe that Brian Peter died largely because his Maternal family had never allowed him to feel loved, wanted, or very important to anyone. He was very much wanted by his Father, but Peter wasn't able to get custody, and any contact was made extremely difficult. The boys, and everyone else, were also told that their father had deserted them and didn't want them, or care anything about them. This, added to ADHD, a very short marriage that didn't work out (two kids from dysfunctional families tried to make it and didn't), legal problems stemming from the breakup, custody issues with the coming baby, and Brian was overwhelmed, scared and, I guess, just couldn't take anymore hurt and Pain.

He hung himself, we lost a very special son and brother, his daughter lost the chance to ever know her father, and the world lost a sensitive, caring person who basically just wanted to help people-he was an EMT-and love and be loved. Suicide is such a tragedy and waste for everyone concerned.

This is why I have a link for suicide prevention at the bottom of this page for anyone who might be interested or feel the need for help or information. Below is a picture of Brian Peter at a party for his old martial arts (one of his big interests) class in Ambler, PA (he is in the left foreground).

Things I Don't Care For

People who hurt children, those who try to force others to live by THEIR beliefs, bigotry, racism, hypocrisy, and holier-than-thous (though I'm sure I've probably been guilty of all at one time or another).

Kymberly was sick when the group picture was made-so this has to do until we have the opportunity to make another one-we're kind of scattered over the county at present.
